Capella Hanoi is a 47-room luxury hotel at 11 Le Phung Hieu Street, a few steps from the Hanoi Opera House and Hoan Kiem Lake. It opened in April 2021 and was designed throughout by Bill Bensley as a homage to the opera world of 1920s Hanoi, with every room themed on a performer, composer or designer. It has won a long list of awards since opening. It is a hotel only; rooms are not sold.

What you get

Rooms are individually styled with operatic artefacts and portrait art by Kate Spencer; premier rooms and suites have wrought-iron French balconies, and four Opera Suites on the top floor have large terraces. The Diva’s Lounge bar and Backstage restaurant continue the theme.

Prices and buying

There is nothing to buy here. Apartments for sale in central Hoan Kiem are rare; most buyers look further out in Ba Dinh, Tay Ho or new towers to the west.

Renting and holiday use

Rates have started at around USD 270–390 a night, rising to several thousand for the top suites.

Pros and cons

  • Pros: one of Hanoi’s most acclaimed hotels, steps from the Opera House and the lake, highly individual design
  • Cons: very high prices, small hotel books up fast, no long-stay options

Who it suits

Travellers on a special trip who want a design-led luxury hotel in the French Quarter.
